What Happened to July????

Well, two things: I decided to do a short story writing challenge... and the university semester began.

Of the two, the university semester was good news for the daily sketching, since I tend to sketch in tutorials and lectures so I don't irritate the lecturers by asking questions or making observations when they are very short on time. It also means I don't dominate a class space, which I tend to do unless I have something else to do.

The story writing... well, you should all know that almost everything comes secondary to the writing, but I won't blame you if you didn't, since I've really only just started working that out for myself.

Anyways, I did get a few more sketches done in July. I was going to pad out the blog with them, but I'll just post the snipped and tidied versions below. The final sketch for July is one I did during the 7-8 hours I was in the emergency waiting room waiting to see if my son had appendicitis - he didn't and he's home and well, but it was a bit stressful for a while.

So, without further ado, on with the sketches.

As you can see, I have a long way to go...

Daily Drawing - July 6, 2015: Improbable Creature #7

I ran out of time today, so this rapid sketch is all I managed. What did it teach me? Well, I really need to go and study how wings work.

Daily Drawing - July 5, 2015: Improbable Creatures #6

Today's creature is... hairy.

Daily Drawings - June 2015

Well, it didn't end up being daily - my life went through a bit of an upheaval and the art was one of the first things I had to sideline. The first three sketches were very disheartening and I was convinced I very much sucked.

And then I did this one in pencil, using a book cover as a guide. It was not a bad start.

And then I wound out the month with this:

And I was fairly happy.

Now I only have to keep it up.

Daily Drawing - July 3, 2015: Improbable Creatures #4

Woke up with this idea, but found it harder to execute than expected. Now I must add 'practice drawing plants' to my list of things to do. I'll add this to the pile of stuff I need to work on. I didn't quite pull it off this time.

Daily Drawings - July 2, 015: Improbable Creatures #3

Today's improbable creature is a reptiloid with some inspiration drawn from the beaver, and some from the cat, and maybe a little from those dinosaurs with the colourful tails.

Daily Drawing - July 01, 2015: Improbable Creatures #2

Here is today's sketch, and this time I actually intended to draw a mousething with wings. I also learned that I really need to practice drawing humans... oh, well.

Daily Drawing - June 30, 2015: Improbable Creatures #1

Well, I'm not doing as well on these as I might, so I'm trying something different. I'm going to draw first thing in the morning, instead of last thing at night, and see if that makes a difference. Today, I woke up thinking of a tree. It's the tree to the left front of the picture. And then I wanted to draw a deer, but the head was wrong, so I created a dragon, instead. So, for July, I think I'll create some improbable creatures, as that's what seems to be inspiring me at the moment.

This is where I would have said my drawing was around thirty years ago... and it's a lot better than the sketches I've tried earlier this month. I have a ways to go to before I can start making beautiful art like Algol, Svenya Liv, Nic Weissman, Claudio Pozas or other folk, but that's what this blog is about - the journey.

Daily Drawing, April 16, 2015 - Aimless Doodling

I was uninspired, tired and short of time, but I picked up a pen, anyway...
